A mainstay of the herb garden, Marjoram is also a very valuable addition to the essential oil repertoire, providing an oil which has a number of therapeutic effects as well as being an oil to keep handy in the kitchen.

Traditional Aromatherapy Uses For Marjoram Essential Oil

Marjoram is most widely used for its soporiphic effect and as a sedative – so should be used with care and never in a situation where alertness is important – such as on a car air freshener pad for instance – but a drop or too at most on an oil burner in the bedroom of someone who suffers from insomnia can provide great benefits!

It is reputed to be a comforting oil – so users suffering from depression or grief may benefit from trying it
It is also traditionally used as an anti-aphrodisiac amongst religious orders

The oil contains high levels of camphor, origanol and pinene and as such is useful in steam inhalations treatments for clearing the respiratory ways and alleviating chest and nasal congestion.

Patricia Davis in her excellent book Aromatherapy – an A-Z ( Published by The CW Daniel Company Ltd) also points out its uses in treating high blood pressure and heart conditions, as it dilates the arteries, and this benefit can be readily transferred to the home practitioner by adding it to a massage oil dilute which revives tired muscles as well as providing some relief to arthritis and rheumatism sufferers by dilating the capillaries just below the skin surface.
